Used car buying checklist
Check the car's story before you agree to buy it.
A test drive is important, but it cannot reveal every risk. Use these checks to ask better questions, spot issues early and decide whether the asking price still makes sense.
MOT and service history
Review MOT results, advisories and service records. Repeated faults or gaps in maintenance deserve a conversation with the seller.
Finance and theft markers
Check for outstanding finance and stolen markers before paying a deposit. These can affect whether the seller has the right to sell the vehicle.
Mileage history
Compare the mileage on the dashboard, MOT records and service paperwork. A reading that does not add up can change a car's value.
Damage and write-off history
Find out whether the car has been written off or has recorded damage. Ask what happened and inspect repairs carefully before you decide.
Import, export and scrap status
Confirm the vehicle's status and paperwork. Imported, exported or scrapped vehicles can need extra checks before they are suitable for the road.
Vehicle identity
Match the registration, VIN and documents to the car in front of you. Differences may be an honest mistake, but they should always be resolved first.
